Leasing in Orange County(Galveston Daily News, March 5, 1901) Orange,Tex., Mar. 4--The smoke from the oil lake that was fired at Beaumont yesterday was floating past here all yesterday afternoon and last night in long, dark streamers that at first puzzled those who were not aware of the fire. New companies are showing up here almost every day with a view toward boring. Fred S. Pond, Peter Stulter, Cristian Poesser, and Edward Selderman, all of Oil City, Pennsylvania, have taken over some important leases in this county, and today entered into a contract to sink a well within 90 days. M. L. Lockwood and Son secured several leases and have ordered machinery from their holdings in Pennsylvania, which is expected here in time to begin work by the first of next month. They are now at Johnson's Bayou, La., with a view to leasing oil rights. One or two parties went there ahead of them, but there is room for others. (compiled by W. T. Block) |
